3 Tips for Developing Leaders

How effective is your physician leadership program?

Although most of our physicians are taught and prepared to be great doctors, when it comes to figuring out how to be great leaders, they’re left on their own. This mean’s it’s up to healthcare organizations to help physicians hone in on, develop and improve their leadership capabilities.

In addition to investing in new technology and other innovations, healthcare organizations should also be investing in nurturing physician leadership capabilities.

Here are a few tips:

  • Offer supplemental training. Give leaders at all levels the opportunity to mentor or attend leadership training. Offer specialized training to even the highest levels of leadership to expand your pool of potential leaders.
  • Give younger physicians a chance. Start physician leadership training early. The sooner physicians are developed and prepared to lead, the more they will have to offer.
  • Have a strategy. Establish a plan, and implement it. Not only will this type of strategy save time and money, it will also allow your leadership development program to fully grow.

Now more than ever, healthcare organizations need to make efforts to putting value into improving physician leadership by recognizing leaders and assisting them in their development.
